It all depends on how much he weighs now. I think you should investigate on how much a german shepard weighs, how much their dog weighs, and if he isn't at the right weight, talk to her about it. Telling someone they aren't feeding the dog properly is not a good idea just because you assume they don't isn't going to go over well.

German shepards shouldn't be too thin. If you can see the ribs, it's too thin. You should be able to feel the ribs slightly if you run your hands over the dog, but not see them.
Not feeding a dog because it poops is just plain nuts. A high-quality dog food will make for less stool, since more will be absorbed, and the package will state how much to feed a dog based on its weight. If they're feeding him junk dog food, a lot of it is filler that just passes through the dog's system. He may also have worms or parasites making him thin.
Try bringing your friend a bag of Iams dog food and suggest she try mixing it into her dog's food gradually until he's getting straight Iams. She'll probably see him fill out and have fewer stools.
The jumping part is another training issue. He needs to be kept on a short leash in the house. When he goes to jump up, tug the leash down to keep him on the floor. If he finds it's futile to try to jump up, he'll stop. He can be allowed to drag the leash around the house for a few days so the owner can just put her foot on the end to keep him from jumping. It doesn't take very long for the dog to learn not to jump.

Sheppards are not supposed to be skinny, they are not feeding this dog properly, and the possibility of worms may be there if they are feeding it and it poops more than normal, worms get 90% of what a dog is being fed, after awhile the worms will try to eat at a dog's intestines causing bleeding. They are not treating this dog right at all, poops allot so they don't feed him? I think this is a well deserved call to the Humane Society. The owners of this Sheppard needs some education and that dog needs to see a vet. You are defiantly right. Let this person know, that they are wrong in this matter and the dog may be sick and should see a vet. If it has worms, the other dogs can get them by stepping into a crumb of poop and licking it's paw. Convince her, if she pooped allot would she like it to be starved because of it? Maybe that is why the dog is jumping, it is excited and happy and hopes to be fed. They do eat allot, they need to be fed and dewormed. The Humane society won't tell who called, they can tell them they are routinely checking for licence tags for the dogs. That way, they will have to take the dog to the vet. Another thing, why did they get a dog if they did not want to clean up after it? I wouldn't feel bad about being direct with them, and I would not feel bad about calling on them either if she don't listen.

Hmm- German shepherds are not really supposed to be skinny. These are big dogs, so of course they're going to poop a lot.
Now, if she's concerned about having to wake up to take him for a walk at night, she can take his food up at a certain time in the afternoon or evening. 5 or 6 o'clock is usually good. I haven't had a first-hand look at the dog, but from what you say the dog is slowly starving to death.

usually if a dog is too skinny, they have bad nutrition, they obviously cannot take care of the dog, german shepards are ment to be muscled up and strong. He might have heart worms, my best suggestion is make an call to the animal control, you dont have to give ur name, just report it, they will check out the situation, and that way u can be sure the Dog is healthy, cuz the last thing I would wanna hear is the dog passed away
good luck to you

If he is really skinny, either they are just not feeding him enough or he is sick or both. Since you are there taking care if him right now, give him extra feed. Feed him in a seperate room than the other dogs. Poor doggy. Sounds like they are starving him.

I believe you are right. Give the vet a call and explain this. Then if he thinks there is a problem, relay that information to your friend. If he says that it is normal (which I doubt he will) then say nothing. My friend also has a German shepherd and her dog is not like that.

ask her if shes taken him to the vet.....did she get him at the dog kennel or animal store...private owner....
maybe the doggy has the 1st stage of distemper or something else that is harmful to him.
If the dog is suffering ,but looks fine on the outside still take him to the vet u,her or I am not the vet.
Make sure you ask the owners first if they dont do anything then report it....saving a life reguardless whether it is a animal or human is the right thing to do..
because its a life...and everything deserves to live.

It isn't normal, they shouldn't be over weight because that could give them hip problems, if you can feel or see the ribs he is too skinny. But he has a lot of energy to jump so it can't be terrible

What kind of idiot gets a dog... a big dog and expects not to have to pick up poop?!?!
All dogs poop, my lord! These people aren't planning on having children are they? Would hate to see what the reaction to all that poop would be.
