Stovetop = Cooktop Same thing. Both are set into a countertop and have an oven elsewhere.
A range is a slide-in all-in-one appliance that coudl be freestanding, w/ cooking surface on top and an oven beneath.

a stovetop is complete with an oven and a stovetop with four burners (hence the word stove-top) connected to it and a cooktop is just the four burners on top of the counter without an oven connected to it.

a stove top is on a stove by that I mean it is above the oven, as a single unit. A cooktop is seperate and contain just burners. The oven is seperate unit that can be mounted in the wall etc away from the burners. ie. island in middle of kitchen.

They are the same thing, cook top or stove top. A free standing unit with both burners and oven is a range or stove.
