I saw a documentary about sleep deprivation yonks ago . In it a school teacher (can't remember his name poor chap) could not sleep and after three days he had to be helped to walk. He was eventually hospitalised and given enough drugs to knock out a hipopotimous but he remained awake.

The doctors found out that the part of his brain that induces sleep had died. After being constantly awake for six months the man actually died of sleep deprivation.

A disk jockey featured on the same programme did a sponsored two week 'stay awake'. He managed it with the help of some friends, and even presented his hour long daily radio programme.

He went through cycles of being alert and of halucinating, which corresponded to his normal sleep pattern.
After the two weeks he slept for about 24 hours.

Unfortunately the sleep deprivation must have done some damage as his personality changed completely. He went from being a kind family man to being eratic and unfriendly to the extreme. Consequently he got divorced.

I've only managed 38 hours but I did play tennis and go to a bar B Q during that time.

Hope you all get a good sleep tonight!

About 42 hours. After that I kept on falling asleep [literally on my feet] for about 2 seconds at a time, woken by the 90 decibel sound of the machine I was operating cycling over. I guess this happens on a lot of night shifts.

Sorry dude, I dunno about the world record. But I've stayed awake for 4 days at a stretch with no sleep...had classes in the morning, had my exams approaching & I was working in a night shift. (& yes, that was without consuming any illegal drugs)
How about u anyway?
