Did more Iraqis die under the 35 years of Saddam's rule OR the 3.5 years of American occupation?

Under Saddams rule 150,000 were said to have died.
In only 3.5 years of American occuptation 80,000 have died already so in the next 4 years it will surpass. But the yearly death rate compared to Saddams yearly death rate is higher.

According to the UN and the US, prior to the first Gulf War, Saddam had killed an estimated 300,000 people. Between the first and second Gulf War, another half a million, mostly Kurds, were on the hit list. They were hit with nerve agents and VX gas, oh, I forgot, Saddam didn't have weapons of mass destruction!!! All you people laying around playing dead, yeah, you, that's right, woman, children, babies, can all get up and go back to living again. Saddam did not have WMD and you are all faking it. Do some research before you put forth a question like you did. Time even got it right, before GWB number two launched his attack and kicked Saddam out. But they all reported no WMD's were found, even though the bodies said they had and did use WMD's on his own people. The sad part of war is people die, and yes, sometimes innocent people die. Blame the Terrorists who hide in safe houses full of people, shot at the troops, and run like hell instead of staying and dying for Allah.

OMG you've got to be kidding, so many more under Saddam that its not even funny, and MOST of them simply disappeared. These are at least accounted for. Also, he gassed "thousands" in one day, so don't go on about how this war is doing them an injustice. They are NOT dying because the war, they are DYING BECAUSE OF RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE!

I am NOT PRO-WAR, however, I do respect and hope these troops come home safely, each and every one. I also hope all Iraqis lead safe and productive lives. The problem is, the foreigner's like the Iranian's, the Arabians, etc that come in and spread hate and bomb civilian's to kill Sunni's, the Shiites, etc. They've destroyed some of the most beautiful Mosques in the world just to spread sectarian hate. So this has NOTHING to do with America. Give it a rest.

Good question Officially bet they say Saddam because collateral deep 6 doesn't count. International Humanity backed off it's story how many Kurds were gassed. Saddam's Brother was no dam good. No friend of Saddam but know he was fighting, Iran, US and Israel. He did have terrorist everywhere. Imagine what will happen when our fear full leader provokes a few more countries.

By my research, more people died under Saddam's rule than the American occupation.

This is a difficult question to answer, as no one seems to be able to agree how many people have died as a result of occupation, and how many were killed by Hussein's regime. However, looking at the "best-case" scenarios vs. the "worst case scenarios", it becomes much clearer.

The largest estimate of Iraqi's killed under American occupation is 250,000, as reported by Information Clearinghouse. This number comes from a joint study between John Hopkins University, Columbia University, and Al-Mustansiriya University. This is a comprehensive estimate, based on statistical analysis of birth and death patterns post-invasion.

The largest estimate of those killed under Hussein's regime is a little harder to calculate. Amnesty International estimates that about 180,000 civilians were killed during the Anfal Campaign from 1986-1989. After the 1991 Gulf War, it is estimated that Hussein's forces massacred 230,000 Kurds and Shi'ites.

Thus far, that would bring the worst reported death tolls of 250,000 for the American occupation, and 410,000 for Hussein.

Of course, these figures do not include the normal, day-to-day executions and repressions that occur in totalitarian regimes. Mass graves are found all the time in Iraq, and not all are linked to the above-mentioned massacres. Nor do these numbers include innocent Iraqis killed during the Iran-Iraq War. The number for Hussein is probably much higher than 410,000.

Using more conservative estimates, the numbers still show more deaths under Hussein. The Iraq Body Count project has a high-end estimate of 45,000 civilians killed during the occupation, though this includes only reported deaths.

As for Hussein, low-end estimates of deaths from just the Anfal Campaign and the Gulf War reprisals come in at about 150,000. This is still much higher than conservative estimates of civilian occupation deaths.

No matter how you crunch the numbers (which I have sourced, unlike many others here), it is clear that many more people died under Saddam's rule than under the occupation. I don't know why people deny this simple, obvious fact. One can still validly oppose the war while recognizing that Hussein was an evil, murderous dictator.

Considering that Hussayn killed thousands of Kurds and thousands of Iraqis died in the war with Iran and the first Persian Gulf War I would have to wager that more died under Saddam.

Far more died under Saddam's rule. See, when Saddam killed them, it was called "ethnic cleansing." When the US slaughtered them, it was called "liberation." Note the difference.

Saddam's rule, without a question, without a doubt. His assaults on those who he disliked, combined with his attempted genocide of the Kurds, the Marsh Arabs, and his war with Iran and Kuwait, Saddam was responsible for millions of his people dying. Estimates I've seen says roughly 200,000 people have died in Iraq since the Coalition occupied...Saddam murdered (estimated) over 500,000 Kurds alone.

Far more under Hussein. Some 300,000 in the war against Iran alone. As for the mass slaughter of the Kurds and the swamp Arabs figures differ but as there were 250,000 swamp arabs in 1977 and only 56,000 in 1997 its a safe bet most were exterminated.
