She'll be fine. Just like in any situation, you'll run into people with stupid points of view, but as far as the military is concerned she's a recruit and will go through the same training as every other enlistee. When I did it, I was 18 and fresh out of high school...it was easier than volleyball camp in my opinion. However, ten years and four babies later, it would certainly be a challenge for me, but definitely not impossible. Have her watch the beginning of Full Metal Jacket a few times...anything short of that is a cake walk. I expected FMJ, and got Club Med compared to it.
The most important thing to remember is invisibility is key. If you're the best, you'll get picked on. If you're the worst, you'll get picked on. Pay attention, and don't take ANYTHING the instructors try to insult you with personally. It's all to build up your confidence. But DO listen to instruction and what they say as far as technique.
Her recruiter should provide her with a list of things to take. They also should provide her with an advance and money orders to pay for inevitable last-minute things at the shoppette. If she has a POS recruiter, email me and I can get a list. My husband is finishing up recruiting duty and I have access to all that.
Reception will be a change, but it'll make everything seem like it's fun. Then you get to REAL basic and they scream and spit and intimidate those first days and weeks. Expect a short, rushed phone call, if you get one from her at all. She'll earn her phone priviledges as the weeks progress. Write her letters the moment she leaves, so when she gets you an address to send her mail, you're ready to address and stamp the envelopes. Letters are the BEST.
Good for your mom for taking this brave step. I'll proudly shake her hand if I ever run into her.

She will be treated like a cadet. Tough but like the men.
They do not cut anyone slack, it is the way to get a lot of soldiers killed. The enemy does not care if you are a man or woman.
She can do it, many women have. She can not quit after a few days if she does not like it. This not camp, but boot camp. Tell her Good Luck!

whahaha, air force is like community college. Anyway, as a basic militiary training instructor (drill sergeant in all the other branches) females get treated pretty much the same nowdays. I say pretty much because there are poeple who keep some pretty stupid sexist feelings. But, by and large she will be treated equally. Bring only the necessities. I must say, Shame on you for criticizing her! She obviously would not have made a commitment like this if it wasn't important. the biggest thing she needs from you now is your support. You should be proud of her.

Women are treated like people in boot camp. I went through Navy boot camp myself, and while it was intense and physically demanding, I was a better person for having done it, and for having served my country for six years.
Shame on all of you who disparage this--or any--woman for going into the military! You would not enjoy the freedom to belittle soldiers and sailors if we did not. And shame on your for not doing your own part. If everyone got off their fat butts and did the same, we would be all the better for it.

I had two daughters go to boot camp. Neither had problems with their fellow (male) boot campers. Both were treated like the men - it was a rigorous, very intense training process.
Your mom needs to do what she needs to do. She can decide for herself whether to go. She may make it through with flying colors and be very proud of herself for it.
Would you really want to deny her that opportunity by talking her out of it?

don't worry. they get treated the same. I went through the air force boot camp and it was easy. you should have told us what branch she was going into. but tell her to bring only the necessities. her recruiter will tell her what is considered contra-ban. the males and females are pretty much kept seperate.
tell her good luck

Like recruits! Even moms are treated that way. Tell her to stay home and take care of her family. We really don't need someone's mom protecting us.
