If you mean a canine friend, it can hurt forever, as long as one, someone, remembers them. If you or someone you know is grieving, I'm sorry for your loss.

The strongest feelings of grief, of just totally falling apart several times an hour, or day... that does become gentler. It can take weeks, months, even longer. It depends on each person and with whom they trust that can share their feelings.

I've trained and worked some of mine as service dogs; the quality of my life depended on them for a dozen years or more. Some I have raised were born into my hands and went to their final sleep as I again held them in my hands, with me remembering them as wiggling newborns over a dozen years before.

Some dogs especially become 'heart' dogs. They are the ones that reach you so deep, it feels incomprehensible to imagine life without them sometimes.

The partnership and memories never fade. Years later, tears can fall just as hard. The lessons they taught stay with you and help you teach and learn from others. They live on in the stories you share. They are never really gone.

It may last a life time. That is what you call happy memories. Thirty some years ago, someone slightly nearer and dearer than my bestest friend asked me to leave well enough alone. I just may be able to renew the friendship? How did you loose your bestest friend? Think of it as being on pause.

It all depends, if it was a lifelong friend about a month or so, if it was a new pup, about a week or 2. When my dog died I felt sad for a month I still miss her and I always will but it is not near as bad as it was a year ago.

There will always be an ache in your heart, but the pain will lessen with time. It is different with different people. I have lost dogs years ago and it still hurts so bad at times that I cry for them. I am so sorry for your loss.

About as long as losing a wife takes. Best thing to do with losing a dog is to get another unlike with the wife tho.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Whenever I think of mine, I try to replace the sad thoughts with the funny and happy memories.
