We just got a dog today and my youngest son is TERRIFIED of her. lol The dog is a little bishon and not scary at all.... very friendly. If the dog just looks at my son (who is almost 2 btw) he breaks out in hysteria. Anyone have any suggestions on getting him to trust her? I know not to push or rush it... but any tips would be helpful!

She's actually a bichon mix... they told me she's part lhasa apso too but I don't see it. A lot of people have bichons and kids and do fine. I know, I grew up with (pure breed) bichons.

Please don't assume I'm some idiot who knows nothing about dogs. I just want helpful tips on how to get my son to trust her more.

Let him watch you interact with the puppy and see how much fun you are having. You are going to love your bichon, they are very smart and adorable. Wagging tails and wet puppy kisses to you and your sons.

Today it is a new experience for him and he does not know how to act with a dog. Just don't leave them alone together. Let him see you play with the dog so he will see it is a good thing. In a day or 2 he will be playing with her too. Congrats on the new puppy. BTW, a bishon is very fragile, make sure he doesn't pick her up and drop her. Teach him how to pet the pup and to not pick her up. If you had asked me beforehand what kind of dog you should get with a 2 yr old in the house, I would have suggested a medium sized dog that would not be so fragile.

If you have another trusty person in your household, this might do easy. Have your dog in a sitting posture, then have someone hold the dog or massage it. Then guide your son towards it so that he knows it wont bite, and have him first touch his back, neck, or head. When he can stroke his fur/hair, then he can work his way towards letting the dog lick or nuzzle him.
