No matter what anyone says, it is good to have at least one credit card. And, I wouldn't recommend that it be an AmEx since it is not accepted in many places which can be a problem if you travel.

There are several reasons to have a credit card:

1 - for travel: if you are making hotel or car reservations, a credit card is essential. Without one you have to use a debit card and they will freeze hundreds of your dollars for up to 10 days which can be problematic.

2 - for emergencies: if you are stuck somewhere without access to cash, many places wont take an out of area check so having a credit card available can really save you.

3 - to establish a credit record: a good credit record is essential these days. Just about everyone checks your credit to see if they want to do business with you. Without good credit you can miss out on: jobs, apartments, utilities (without deposits) and good interest rates on loans.

4 - cash back rewards: using a credit card can get you cash back. As long as you use it responsibly and pay it off every month, there is nothing wrong with using credit cards for your purchases.

The process is basically this:

1 - you fill out an application either online or in person
2 - they run that application and receive a copy of your credit report
3 - they see if your credit history fits what they're looking for
4 - they say yes or no.

If you don't have any credit you may have a hard time getting a card. If this is the situation, apply for a secured card or ask a friend/family member to add you as an authorized user to their account so you get some of their history.

Good luck. For more info on how to build/maintain credit read the forums at creditboards.com

If this is your first credit card - DO NOT apply for an Amex card, especially an Amex One card. It is a fairly new card that is proving to be a major headache for MANY people. If you do not have credit history, or your credit history is not in good shape when you apply with Amex, you will be applying for nothing - they will "not" approve you.

Start with Bank of America, Orchard Bank or HSBC.

Go to their websites and enter your info. Do not apply for any card from any other website that is not the actual creditor site!!!!!

I would suggest applying for a credit card at a local credit union, if you have one. Definately set yourself to a comfortable limit you can pay back. Starting small like $500 is a safe bet. I would also suggest to see if it is a fixed rate credit card. That means they can't charge all different rates.

Read the Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsay. You do not need a credit card. There are many ways around it. But if you must, get a secured card. This way you will never really be in debt.

Don't do it. Save yourself some headache. If you MUST, and I mean, absolutely must apply for a credit card, I recommend the One Card from Amex. I love, love, love this card...interest protection and a savings account to boot. What could be better?!
Go to their site and apply. It'll be the only one you need.

You apply; they perform a means and credit history test; if you pass you get a credit card, if you don't then you don't get one.
