i need a new screen for my bigscreen t.v. how do i go about finding out what i need?

Here's one... However, you might want to have a technician come and look at your big screen before you begin your DIY project. It might be more work than it's worth.

You'll need to go to the manufacturers website.

Find out who the manufacturer is (JVC, Sony, Hatachi, etc.) and go to their site. Look for a "Support" or "Replacement Parts" Page. Somewhere there should be an option to order parts (or order repair, if it's under warranty.)

Alternately, you can call the 1-800 number that's on the papers you got when you purchased it (if you kept them.)
