Yes learning new languages can be tough, even if you have a degree in Computer Science, Law, or whatever. Its all technique in learning a language, you must find your own way and practice more and use it in everyday life all the time in order to grasp it and excel. Its best to learn in school but a good CD-R course like Language Now and Speak are great tools to help. One of the worst ways to learn Spanish is to be taught by a friend or family member who is not a teacher, there are step by step exercises and procedures that need to be followed, someone who is fluent at Spanish and/or has spoke it all their life since childhood will disregard these steps without knowing and it will be impossible to learn correctly.

I had problems learning Spanish too. Go to Radio Shack and get a translator. It translates English to Spanish and vice versa. It has a say button on it. It will pronounce the word correctly for you and uses it in sentences the proper way. I learned enough Spanish in 8 weeks to hold a conversation. Good luck

It is possible, but I am sure you are learning little by little. :) I have the same situation and I like to learn to music in Spanish with lyrics in my hands or watching movies in English but with Spanish subtitles. If you have time, you might want to pick up a class at a local college--you will learn the basic grammar and it will help you to learn more from listening to your wife and such. Good luck!

Just keep trying. It's taken me 3 years of Spanish classes (waste of time) and 2 years with my boyfriends family hearing Spanish every day and also in music, tv, movies, etc. and I still only understand 75% of it and RARELY speak it . I don't like to speak it because I don't know the grammar. Usually I talk to my in-laws in English and they answer me in Spanish because we both understand eachothers language but are too stubborn to speak it LOL

im not trying to sound rude, but maybe you're just not trying hard enough. you have to take a dedicated, daily, serious effort. learn grammar!!!!! go out to teacher stores and buy the spanish learning books and do them! practice reading in spanish, even if you don't know what it means, it'll help your tongue to get more used to the pronunciation. when you rent blockbuster movies, put the surround sound in spanish, but the subtitles in english, and vice versa. put every effort possible into this and it'll happen.
there is no "try"
there is only "do"

I have a girlfriend who taught her husband Spanish by speaking to him in nothing but Spanish. He can understand her easily and was able to navigate his way in Costa Rica for two months without a problem.

Well some people are better ar learning languages than others.

Ask her to speak some Spanish to you, starting very simple... You can easily learn the most common phrases ("good morning", "good night", "i love you") when said to you by your loved one.

Don't try to learn the grammar from books, learn it by speaking, starting slowly.
