looking to import a 1960's classic Italian sports car from a dealer in australia to Caliornia. Can someone illuminate me on the legal process (DOT?) and what costs I can expect to incur (shipping, duty, taxes, etc...)?

I would have to get quoted from several freight forwarders like Panalpina. They are found at every port and major airports. I have heard that from Australia it takes a long time to get the car into the US.

First, getting a transport company to move your car shouldn't be to hard, though, because the car is a "classic" and might imply that it would require special care from the transportation company. Do a search on the internet or this dealer down under, why isn't he providing some help? As for the U.S. Customs or the Dept. of Transportation, well, that's not as hard as you think. Customs will want to inspect the vehicle and see if there is nothing coming in to the country except the vehicle. They will also want to see the paper work from D.O.T. Now, the rule of thumb is that the year of manufacture for the car has to comply with the same year in safety standards and regulations as the U.S. Now, you said a 1960's vintage, there were a few guidelines or regulations for that decade, but pretty easily to get through. Now, the kicker. I don't see the Federal Government as a big problem in your case, it's the State government....Mainly, the emmission control standards inwhich they would hold you to.
