Tell her that you really do not want her to get you something expensive for your birthday and explain your reasons for this decision to her. Then let her know that you want her to respect your decisions and if she doesn't, then she must not love/like you the way you thought she did. Then, if you think it's best, let her know that if she does buy you an expensive gift you will break up with her.

Convince her you really want something that isn't that expensive by picking it out for yourself. My boyfriend and I went through the expensive presents phase and then realized we didn't really need any of it. We both would rather get presents that were more practical than expensive jewelry I never wear or cologne he can't stand to smell.
Women understand that men tend to be more practical in their needs, so just explain to her what you really want. For example my boyfriend is a cop and one year I bought him a new set of boots for work. This year we went out and picked up some new kitchen appliances.
It may not be as romantic but it makes more sense. If what you pick out happens to be not that expensive, all the better.

what's your age? That makes a difference.
The first expensive gift people give each other, according to etiquette is when you get engaged. So it depends if you both are engaged already and if maybe she's trying to either stack the deck in that direction, or she feels for some reason that she has to "buy" you or your affection. Of course you can't stop people from doing what they want to do, but then means she wants you to buy her something expensive in return. If you want to stop her then that means you're not serious with her and maybe you should tell her that.

let her know you much prefer inexpensive presents that mean something to expensive presents...
make a deal with her about not spending a lot on birthday or christmas presents..
my partner is very anti beirthday and it upsets him for me to mention his birthday let alone buy him a present so out of respect for his wishes I don't buy him a present ......
I have explained to him that I like to celebrate my birthday but it doesnt have to be a big celebration.... so he takes me to lunch or dinner at an inexpensive place and buys me a book or something similar on a topic that I am interested in... out of respect for my wishes we do celebrate my birthday...
I approcahed this very tough problem from the point of view that each person 'owns' their own birthday nd may decide what to do about it.....
my partner simply did not want to get into a competitive present buying situation in our relationship.
hope this gives you some ideas...

make sure you tell her not to get you something expensive... and that if she does you or she will have to find a way to return it....(unless it's like a car or something) tell her that you aren't into the materialistic thing and maybe she'll understand...
Women like to shop.... so I don't think she will... but you need to get your point across....

Tell her the most valuable thing she can give you is her love and loyalty and she can express this with a single red rose. Good Luck.

i think no matter how many times you tell her not to get you sumthing expensive, she's not gonna listen. wen she gives it to you just tell her, that no matter now cheap or expensive her give to you it, you'll always love her.
