My gf is set on getting me something expensive for my b-day, how can i get her not to?

My boyfriend and I went through the expensive presents phase and then realized we didn't really need any of it. We both would rather get presents that were more practical than expensive jewelry I never wear or cologne he can't stand to smell.

So it depends if you both are engaged already and if maybe she's trying to either stack the deck in that direction, or she feels for some reason that she has to "buy" you or your affection.
