What you term "keyhole" surgery, is, I think, what medical personnel refer to as laproscopic surgery, where they make three small incisions in the upper abdomen, usually one in the midline and two below the right ribcage. In one, a small camera is placed, in the other two long instruments. The abdomen is expanded with air so they have better visualization by the camera. The instruments are used to perform the exact same surgery they would do if you were laid wide open. You will be under general anesthesia and won't remember any of it. The extra air is removed before you awaken.

The advantages of this approach is not for the doctor, it can be more challenging to do than with direct visualization, it is for the patient, whose recovery is VERY much improved and shortened.

In the good ol' days, gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) would keep someone out of the workplace for 3-4 weeks and there was a large scar as they cut through all the abdominal muscle layers below the ribs on the right. The recovery was so difficult because all the muscle layers had to heal together before you could do much of anything. Now days it is more like 3-4 days.

Without a gallbladder, you will want to go slow on eating at first, small meals, still low on fat (good advice in general) until you find out how your body can handle food. For the majority of people, within 3-4 months, they can eat pretty much anything they want.

Best wishes.

I had gullbladder surgery. I don't think it was key hole. I had three cuts. right by the belly button one about 11/2 in above the belly button and the 3rd off to the right side toward the top. I can hardly see the marks a year later. It was the easies surgery i've been through. I was up doing my usual stuff the next day.

My Dad just had his gallbladder out two days ago. He told me that the key hole surgery was the way to go. He had little pain and four small holes on his abdominal area. He was up and walking the hall in the hospital the same day. He is home and doing well.
