I have just started a jogging program for the first time in my life. I am planning on running 3 times a week (that’s all I have time for). Currently I can barely run for 2 minutes in a stretch and then I have to stop to take a breather for about 3-4 minutes. Anyhow, with running 3 times a week, about how long do you think it will take, where I am able to run 5 miles in a stretch? I am about 210 lbs...

You need to strengthen your leg muscles before attempting to just put in more miles. I'd recommend adding elliptical workouts to your running and occasionally doing squats and leg curls.

Also, diet become very important especially when you get older. Don't be so tempted to eat a very high meat protein diet which seems to be the fad nowadays to lose weight fast. You won't be able to run on a high meat protein diet.

Also, it helps 10 folds if you run with a buddy or a group, but many running groups will do speed workout right away which is totally wrong for someone starting a running program.

firstly, you should start with a 15 minutes easy walk and then try to climb a small hill, also walking. This way you adjust your muscles and get used to the pace. with each session, minimise the time of easy walking and increase the time of climbing. After about 1 month, start with easy running; like walking, but more agitated. In time, you will be able to run 5 miles in a stretch. This is how I lost about, after 2 month, 10lbs a week. However, I used a easy diet, also.

Yeah, you definitely want to start with walking briskly, and after you've accomplished that goal of 3 times a week with out being completely out of breath, then you can step it up to half walk/half jog. Start by jogging the first half, and walking the last. And so on and so on eventually you'll be able to lightly jog the whole route and in the end run it.

I remember when I first started to jog I had the same situation. What I did was at first I jogged at a distance I was comfortable with. The next time I jogged, I ran a farther distance than I did the first time. So what I'm trying to say is that run a further distance each time you jog. It will condition your heart which will enable you to jog further and further each time you jog. I can jog up to about 3 miles now. Trust me it works.

WOAH there!!! Walk first. Just walk. Walk fairly fast and with purpose for 30-40 minutes a day for the first month and gradually build up. If you run now and hate it you'll give up.

shouldn't take that long if your committed, just keep track of how far you go each time,
example if you run2 mins first day then break, try to go 2min 30 sec the next just keep trying to beat yourself, remember you are only competing against yourself, i know its tempting but don't compare yourself to others, just do your best and then try to beat your best.

walk - don't run

Most will disagree but doctors will tell you walking is better for exercise.

Running can jolt your inside and cause problems.
