It sounds like you want to use a radar gun to check the speed of vehicles, perhaps in your neighborhood. This would most likely vary state-to-state. Where I live, the police will loan you a radar gun if you have a speeder in your neighborhood. You can't ticket them, nor do anything else to them. You can make notes, date, time, speed, license place, location, etc., and give that information to the police and they will send the registered owner of the car a letter that it has been observed speeding. This usually stops the problem. I don't know if this is what you want to do. I can't give you legal proof. As far as the FCC goes, as long as the power transmitted is below a certain limit, no license is required. You can check at the FCC web site, fcc.gov.

They use radar guns to measure the speed of baseballs for pitchers. Using them to check cars isn't that much different. Just don't take any action on your own. Or whatever it is you want to do.

First I'll start by busting some myths!!!
Radar detectors are only illegal in Virginia and Washington DC
Canada is a different story

As for operating a radar gun the police generally are NOT cool with you just sitting on the side of the road shooting traffic. I own a police laser gun which I use to test out laser jammers and such and I have had more of a problem with other people wondering what I was doing. When ever I am testing out a laser jammer on a road I alway call the cops ahead of the time to make sure they are cool with it. One officer who actually came to see if the jammers worked or not and he said if i didn't call and they were getting complaints I would get charged for impersonating a police officer

Each State has it's own independent Laws governing Radar detectors.
I would like to tell you the exact answer but What State?
You could look it up in a Law book.
Ask your local police department . Ask a Lawyer.
Or if your chicken ask the Cop shop what the civil violation code is for using a radar detector . They may just tell you it isn't applicable in your state. Or they may dissapoint you by reading one out loud.

It's based on state laws. Georgia was the first to make them illegal years ago. I'm not sure which state you live in so I can't tell you for sure if you're okay where you live.
