Get a tennis ball - if you don't have any, go to the pet department at your local department store and buy one - they're cheaper there than in the sporting goods dept. Stand next to a wall and place the tennis ball between the painful area and the wall. Lean against the tennis ball with as much pressure as you can stand for as long as you can stand (10 - 15 seconds). You may notice a difference right away, but I don't feel better until the next morning. This works great! Also, apply heat. This helps relax the muscles. If this doesn't work, you should see a massage therapist or chiropractor for help. Blessed be, Gypsy

I get knots in my back all the time and even though I get a massage regularly sometimes I use a tennis ball to get rid of knots in my back.
First, get your back warm. Take a bath or shower or use a hot water bottle or some kind of heating pad. I like the Thermacare heat wraps. Next put the tennis ball on the floor. Lie on the tennis ball on the floor on the knot. Sometimes I have to roll the tennis ball around a bit to find the knot. Once you have the tennis ball on the place where the knot is, sink into it. It hurts, but put as much weight on it as you can stand and relax as much as possible. Use deep breathing techniques that you use in yoga. You will feel the knot "untie" and relax.

You need moist heat to get rid of them. Use a dish towel (it is abut the right size) or fold a bath towel. You need to wet it thoroughly. Then place it in a ziploc bag. Heat it in the microwave to as hot as you can stand it. Lay on it for 20 minutes. That should do the trick. If the bagged towel cools off before the twenty minutes is up, be prepared with a second heated bagged towel to swap. If it doesn't work after one try. Do it again another 45 minutes later and so on until it works. This works for neck knots as well.

My husband massages my back and legs each night before we go to sleep .Its the only way I can get some rest without a lot of medications. He starts out gently and gradually gets more aggressive, after about 20 minutes I find I can sleep.I really don't know what to tell you to do for yourself, except a warm ,not hot bath or strong shower then get into bed.I wish you success with whatever you do to ease your pain.

I have back problems... some things I do:

I invested in a firm mattress.
Exercise (sometimes pain or knots can be due to extra weight or a weak back.)
"Yoga for back care" this video specifically targets your back it makes you relax, stretch, and tone your back.
Also if you carry a back pack, baby, breif case heavy purse try to be conscious of how often you wear it on you left/right side remember to switch it through out the say so you aren't just straining one side.
I also have my boyfriend give me a massage when it is really bad.
You should go to a doctor/chiropracter if it is consistant!

Get a massage, and stretch your back. I've had knots on my back before because I didn't stretch enough after engaging in strenuous physical activity. Stretch before and after strenuous physical activity next time.

Here are some stretches for your middle back:

Either massage or put two tennis balls in a sock and tie at the end. Basically put it under your back and roll over it. A good bath helps too.
