What percent of the population in Malaysia speak English?

Question

While I was there I saw a lot of signs, advertisements, and television shows in English or at least with English subtitles. How many people there speak English out of the 54 million population? I was under the impression it was all either Bahasa Malay or Chinese Mandarin...

First of all.Congratulations!! You have managed to increase the population of Malaysia from 25 million to 54 million overnight! he he..To my knowledge we only have 25 million people in Malaysia plus minus a few million illegals immigrant .. :-)

Back to your question..Most Malaysian do speak English..at least basic English..You shouldn't face any problem communicating in English in major cities and towns..Even though the Bahasa Melayu or the Malay Language is the official language you would have no problem if you could only speak solely in English.. A lot of signage are bilingual (normally in Malay and English) and most taxi drivers can speak good English too..In fact we have what we called the Tourist Police in major city that could speak good English and are there to especially assist the tourist.

For your information other major language in Malaysia are Mandarin n Cantonese (spoken by the Malaysian chinese), Tamils and other minor language..

Most of them can speak english .. its just that malay is the 1st language.. therfore most of the signs n advertisement are in malay .somehow their malay is the correct n good coz sometimes me being a malay too (i'm not malaysian) have a hard time dephiring the meaning coz my malay language has been intermix with english n chinese.. hehe

english is the 2nd language after Malay. you can safetly say about 70% above now minus the older generation and orang asli/ bumiputera.
