Whether the program, but not the data, in the file is corrupt or if the self-extractor won't overwrite a same version installation. A file from said .exe is needed to use the installation because the latter's copy is corrupt. Full re-install isn't an option due to damaged discs.

winace archive program can do that almost

some of them can be opened by winzip

but you have to pay for it though

I don't think there's any easy way to accomplish that.
