I wouldn't say they enjoy barking, I mean they don't bark because barking is fun, they bark because they are having fun. Its like us giggling or laughing. I'm sure you know, that when they play with each other, there is a wide range of noises, and for the most part you can tell what kind of mood their in by the noises they make. There are other types of barking too, anger, fear, concern, and loneliness sometimes. I would think yes, if you yelled at them every time they bark, they may not associate that with the barking, but with the playing part, and stop playing altogether, leading to a sad Yorkie... Tell your neighbor upstairs that the dogs are not barking to aggravate anyone, and sorry if they do. But this is my condo, and I will allow my dogs to have fun and be expressive. (i wouldn't let them go on all out barking tirade tho, and not late at night) If its THAT Annoying for the neighbor, there are ways to insulate the floors, relatively in-expensive to minimize sounds. Her choice, I say let them bark hehe. But I am biased, my aunt and uncle have 2 Yorke's, Ernie and his sister Lily. They are awesome, and very smart. Let them be them.
Take care

Same reason you enjoy getting on here and asking and answering questions. It's a form of communication.
My sister has a dog that barks at the wind. We had her for a brief period, (during my sisters drama...) because we already had a dog and they got along well...plus we have yard space. That dog barked at EVERYTHING! We love her, and wanted her, until the baby came and we (I) couldn't handle two dogs and a baby all in the house.
Anyhow, we ended up giving her back to my sister. She now lives in a condo, and I often wonder how her neighbors possibly stand it. I mean she barks all the time. Our dog barked when she would bark just for merit.
BTW... Our dog is a Yorkie, and She is a Shi Tzu.
Let 'em bark, but if the neighbors DO complain, listen to them. It can be rather nerve racking when you're not a dog person. Luckily, I AM very much a doggy person. :) GOOD LUCK!

Barking is a dog's way of talking to another dog. And while it doesn't usually bother the dog's owner, it sure can bother the neighbors! Imagine for a minute if your neighbor had cats that yowled for hours at a time and the cats were just playing and expressing themselves. It wouldn't bother her, but it would sure upset you!
Dogs can be trained not to bark in the house. Once they are outside, they can bark to their heart's content.
So, as a responsible pet owner, take the step of training your dogs not to bark indoors. If you can't do it, get a dog trainer to do it for you.

I think they do it for recreation and no it will not make them sad just get them some toys. I have a pug and he is fine when I make him stop he usually just wants my attention and he bugs the neighbors. I really think they should realize that dogs bark, but we should meet them 1/2 way. Get your dog some toys and some stuff to chew on and give them some love. It is okay if they do not bark. It is just being mouthy. My liitle guy has plenty of other noises to make in the house and does not have to bark outside to have fun.

Here's the situation: you live in a condo where you are in close proximity with other people. Apparently, your dogs' barking is disturbing your neighbor. I am completely and totally a dog lover but you have a responsibility to keep your dogs quiet and, no, it will not make them sad. I don't think you need to worry about stifling your dogs' self-expression.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/ZN0Vs
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

when i was a kid my dad told the neighbor next door that as soon as the birds stopped chirping and she stopped yelling at her kids he would make our dog be quiet. when our dog barked it was because her kids were in our yard. anyway, dogs communicate, just like humans. when your dogs are playing the bark will sound different than when they hear a knock at the door. have your neighbor get to know your dogs, hopefully she will see they are your "babies".

It's ok for dogs to bark, but you have to consider others when you live around other people.

Dogs will be dogs and people unfortunately will be...well you know. Get the hell out of the apartment! It's a terrible way for humans and dogs to live. Like a kennel for humans. Good luck.
