I just recived a pre-approved offer in the mail for the Chase BP Visa. It said to visit gasbackrewards.com and apply and I would be approved. Do these pre-approved applications that come in the mail really mean you will automatically be approved?

It only means you met one or more of their criteria to be given the offer, it does not mean they have checked your credit for approval. Its sorta like prewashing dishes. They aren't clean, they are just ready to be washed for real. Don't apply for a credit card if you dont think you will be approved, it will hurt your credit rating. Start with one card and use it for the purchases you would normally make, and pay it off on time each month to build up your credit so one day you can buy a home. Don't spend to the limit. Don't spend more than you can pay off in a short time frame. Don't collect cards. If an offer comes for a lower interest rate, call your current card and ask them to match the rate or cancel the card, and get the better card. Just be smart, you don't need the stuff you want so bad that you can afford to suffer the longrun consequence of credit card debt.

Sorry, but no. "Pre-approved" just means that your record passed their initial screening. If you read the fine print you'll see that they reserve the right to offer you a card on different terms than advertised or no card at all. If you apply for the offer, they will do a full inquiry of your records, and this will show up on your credit report as a request for credit on your part.

It's important to evaluate what they're actually offering and compare it to other actual offers (as opposed to advertisements) you may have received. You always should read and understand the fine print. See Sources for a great guide for that.

Only if your credit rating is not that low. The minimum is like $300.00
My advice to you is throw it away unless you plan on building your credit and that is the only way I would take out a credit card.

Hi,
No they do not mean you will be automatically approved if you apply for the card. It means you meet their qualifications to get approved.
