Felines in zoos are always lean-muscled and trim. They don't exercise any more than a housecat does for its size. Of course the zoo cats have a raw meat diet and that it the best food to keep kitties slim and trim.

I have one kitty who is "pudgy" and I think some tendency to be on the fat side is part of the cat's inheritance.

That being said: Step one is definitely start reading the ingredient labels on your cats' bag of food. The first two ingredients should be some form of meat protein. The third ingredient will be some sort of "filler" needed to manufacture dry food. If either of the first two ingredients is corn that's definitely out. Corn is used to fatten animals for slaughter. They have only about a two-year life span.
Since that's not your objective in feeding your cats do not give them any food with corn in it.

What foods are good? The premium foods of course, more expensive and closer to the diet your cats should have. Some good ones: CA Natural is chicken and rice, Natural Balance has a venison and pea. NB's chicken has chicken and brown rice so does Nature's Variety's Prairie.

When you switch to these foods all your cats can eat them. They have a higher protein content, good for all your cats. We all know that weight doesn't come off fast if you want the loss to be permanent.

So don't be impatient with this. Your fat cats will not be gaining any more weight. All the cats will have better nutrition and actually consume less of the new food over time because they are receiving more appropriate nourishment.

For directions as to how to switch cats to a new dry food click under my name to find how to do that.

Don't go looking for these foods in Petco or Pet Smart. They might have the Natural Balance as I have seen that in our local discount store. Small specialty pet stores are the best place to find these foods. There are other top-notch brands too, I just happen to use those three right now. Most of the owners of the small stores are quite knowlegeable about the quality foods. Learn to read labels. The store where I get my food won't sell Science Diet because they consider it the pits.

I'd be willing to bet that Iam's weight control or whatever has corn in it.

Buy a good quality food with no wheat, corn, soy or by products in it.Reduce the amount of calories that you are feeding per day,try to do interactive play time with your cats every day. If your cats are 5 or older a thorough vet exam is also in order to rule out thyroid issues & diabetes.

Science Diet Light food, dry food, not much wet, not too many treats and play with them, give them toys that make them want to be active.
