I read on here the male dog will only mark his territory by peeing in your house which will have a strong odor AFTER they have bred with a female. Is this true? Or can they be marking their territory without being bred? My dog is 8 months old and has suddenly within the last month began peeing in the house A LOT after he was pretty much housebroken. How can I fix this or is heJUST marking his territory and the only way to fix the problem is to fix him?

A dog reaches sexual maturity sometime between 6 months and a year. Your dog has probably finally reached his maturity and is now more aware of and affected by the scents of other animals nearby. He's also asserting his 'authority' over the other creatures in the home by marking his territory. Best suggestion I can make is to train him (there are many places that can offer the service, teaching both you and him how to act for a nominal fee) and/or speak to your vet, who might have other good ideas.

NO. Whoever said that males won't mark until they have been bred did not know what they were talking about. Marking territory has to do with hormones (as does breeding with every female in season) And the hormones should be flowing nicely in your boy about now.

Neutering him may solve the problem, but even if you do it today, he will need to work the existing hormones out of his sytem before you see any change in his behavior because of the neutering.

However it COULD be that your dog has a urinary tract infection or other physical problem.

You really should get him checked out by the vet just in case, and then make an appointment to get him fixed. It is better for his health and your furniture if you do. If expense is a problem, see if there is a local vet that participates in the low cost spay/neuter program through friendsofanimals.org. Or it may be that you could get help for low cost neuter through your local animal shelter.

about neutering..won't help...

My dog is neutered... that means his testes are cut off, but his penis is still there.. And every so oftne he tries to hump our legs our stand on one of our beds, use its front paws to gather up the bed cover under him and then he humps it... we have to stop him always... a big problem
