Got a call at newspaper today froma guy saying our sports section was wrong in listing Jim Thorpe as black. I checked online, but it seems various publications list him as native american, and other as black.

Their are 2 Jim Thorpes, hence the confusion, 1 is currentlt playing the senior tour he's black and excellent golfer, he played the PGA tour during the time of Lee Elder and before Calvin Peete. The other Jim Thorpe was a football player and Heisman trophy winner and yes he was a Native American - although I prefer the term American Indian, since anyone born in the United States is a Native American.

Jim Thorpe was an American Indian, and he did not play golf. Thorpe played baseball and football, both professionally. As a young man he was an Olympian and won a number of medals. After the fact, it was learned that he had once accepted a small amount of money to play one game of baseball, and his medals were taken away from him. They were given back only recently, posthumously of course.
