and you cant understand what they are going through but you hate to see them doing that to there self. and you love them so much but you feel like there is nothing you can do.

You can't really convince a smoker to quit if they don't want to. And many smokers give up trying to quit because of continued past failures at attempting to quit. If they decide to quit however you must make sure that they get what they really need to actually quit smoking; effective support. Most smokers trying to quit don't know of the critical importance that reaching out and receiving effective supportive plays in quitting successfully. And they end up trying to rely on themselves alone which doesn't work or their family and friends who aren't equipped to provide the right kind of support that quitting smokers need for them to actually succeed long term. You can't make them quit if they don't want to but if they decide to quit make sure to help them in the way that you can help by making sure they actually have access to an effective support program because that is what they will actually need to beat the addiction once and for all and forever.

The best thing that you can do for them is be for them. And the truth is that they won't quit until they are ready. I don't smoke, but I know that it is so addicting that people smoke their entire lives and just can't give it up no matter what. Ultimately, you can't do anything but wait for them to come around and WANT the help to quit. Just be patient, and show that you don't support the habit by refusing to go on a run to the store to get the cigarettes, or go outside and sit with them while they smoke.

Encourage them. Write for literature about quitting smoking. Some of the best literature, believe it or not, can come from tobacco companies. Pretty funny, isn't it? If you are talking about more than smoking, a counselor who is licensed in addiction problems would be great. There are many free clinics for this if you just check. The best counselors to use for any problem like this is the counselor who has "been there, done that."

Buy your friend (relative/or spouse) a box of Step One Nicoderm patches for a gift soon. If they have already tried other methods like quitting cold or tapering off and it hasn't worked out, this method might work for them. The weaning off of nicotine is gradual and if you occasionally break down for one cigarette, but don't start up the habit again, it won't ruin the work of the patch.

be the best friend you can be, give them some Trident Gum to chew instead, etc. Be supportive. Its hard to break a habit/addiction whether it's nicotine, alcohol, food, whatever else is out there.

Now if you're referring to the person smoking cigarettes, there is really nothing that you can do. In order for people to stop smoking they have to REALLY, REALLY want to. And even if they do really want to it's still not easy at all. You can show concern for them, but don't nag them to quit. I know, for me, it pis*ses me off when people who have never smoked try and tell me to quit, because they have no idea.

If you are talking about smoking tobacco, this person will have to want to stop. Knowing they should isn't the same as wanting to stop.
