The big-name Japanese brands (Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, JVC) are typically the hardest to crack; it usually isn't done without some skilled soldering and reprogramming ROM chips. You'll find that most of the comments on the videohelp hack forum (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php?dvdplayer=Panasonic&hits=50&Search=Search ) aren't successful hacks (or aren't revealing hacks at all, just someone posting asking about them).
You're best off spending a little money on a new, easily hackable (just a few keypresses on the remote), lesser-name DVD player; personally, I recommend the Philips DVP-642, which can be hacked region-free, converts PAL properly, and even plays DivX movies burned to disk. The DVP-642 retails from anywhere between $50 and $70 at stores like Best Buy, Amazon and Target.
