The shahaadah is a declaration of faith. Anyone can embrace Islam by saying

'Ash hadu alla ilaha illa Allah, wa ash hadu anna Mohammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu.'

In Arabic, the first part is la ilaha illa Llah - 'there is no god except God'; ilaha (god) can refer to anything which we may be tempted to put in place of God - wealth, power, and the like.

Then comes illa Llah: 'except God', the source of all Creation. The second part of the Shahada is 'Muhammadun rasulu'Llah: 'Muhammad is the messenger of God.

You must say it and believe in it.

The 5 pillars of Islam are:
faith
prayer
zakat-Giving to charity-(if a person can afford to)
Fasting in the month of Ramadan
pilgrimaje-Visiting Hajj (if a person can afford to)

I want to add something to Miz Boon's reply. Some people may not know that Salaat is prayer and Zakaat is charity offerings.

The word for charity offerings in Hebrew is almost the same.
