right down to the nitty-gritty... Should the center piece of bread be un-toasted, lightly toasted, or toasted to the same brownness as the outside pieces of bread? Roast turkey/chicken, boiled, smoked? Ham? Bacon? Does one usually install cheese in this paragon of sandwiches? Buttered toast, mayo, a little mustard? Specifics and details please!
I have been delivering hamburgers and cheeseburgers to a workplace in Asia. My customers are clamoring for classic club sandwiches. Help! I'm a burger-boy, not a club-man.

All three slices of bread should lightly toasted. As for the turkey or chicken for a chicken club, it should be roasted and thinly sliced. No ham. Bacon. Not too crispy. No cheese on a traditional club. No butter or mustard on the toast. Just mayo, turkey, romaine lettuce, tomato and bacon.
Here's how you assemble. For each sandwich, you will need 3 slices of white bread, toasted, mayo as needed, 2 leaves of romaine lettuce, 2 slices of tomato, 3 slices of bacon cooked crisp and 2 oz of sliced turkey or chicken.
1. Place the 3 slices of toast on a clean work surface. Spread the tops with mayo.
2. On the first slice, place 1 lettuce leaf, then 2 slices of tomato, then 3 strips of bacon.
3. Place the second slice of toast on top, spread side down.
4. Spread the top with mayo.
5. On top of this, place the turkey or chicken, then the other lettuce leaf.
6. Top with the third slice of toast, spread side down.
7. Place frilled picks on all 4 sides of the sandwich.
8. Cut the sandwich from corner to corner into 4 triangles. Each triangle will have a pick through the center to hold it together.
9. Place on a plate with the points up. The center of the plate may be filled with potato chips, French fries, or other garnish or accompaniment.
Happy cooking!

So many choices: always toast the bread medium brown; 3 slices bread, mayo (can use regular Hellman's or mix some hot sauce into it) on each slice, thin sliced tomatoes, bacon-crispy, cheese(i like cheddar or a spicy type), juicy roast beef, turkey, lettuce....you can use any meats you want, like hot cappicola ham and instead of tomatoes, use roasted red peppers, or do a mozzarella, tomato, basil, pesto mayo, peperocini club....just go wild!!! oh, and hold the bread together with toothpicks!

A traditional club sandwich has to have lightly-brown toasting on all pieces. The original has turkey, ham, cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato with mayo spread on all pieces of toast. There are variations but this is what one expects when ordering. My husband loves them and doesn't want surprises.

Use 3 pieces of toasted bread of your choice. Toasted equally. Mayonnaise on each slice, ham, cheese and turkey of your choice on the bottom, then another piece of toast with with bacon, lettuce and tomato. Top with another slice of toast. That's how I make them. You can change things but, I think mine is sort of a classic way.
