Your question is interesting to say the least. What is most indicative it that the majority actually can't confront the question.
Those of you who answered: "I would do it legally," or "I would go to Europe - legally" or to Canada, you are all missing the point of the question.
We will assume that if the situation is such that Mexico is a first world country and the US a 3rd. world country as was put forward in the question we can safely assume that 100,000,000 Americans will want to emigrate and Mexico will have an immigration limit from the US of about 150,000 per year, MAXIMUM. Tell me, how do you fit 10 gallons of water into a coke can?
You and your family are constantly hungry, there is almost NO work for you, your children have NO future, you have been rejected by the Mexican immigration quota 10 straight years (and by the Canadians 15 straight and by Europe 12) Now look me right in the eye and give me that 100% bullsh*it answer "I'd only do it legally" just one more time, please (with feeling............)

a. In a case like that, I might leave the United States. (I don't speak Spanish or like Mexican food, though, so a European country would probably be the place to which I'd go.) However, I would not go to the new country illegally or make myself a burden on their society- I'd learn their language, get used to their food and culture, try to get good grades in their schools, and would not commit any crimes. I'd return later to try and save my country.....unless, of course, the damage is irreversible. (Which usually happens with once-great civilizations.)
b. Many illegals go on welfare and many others don't pay taxes (they work for cash):
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=49965
*If Mexicans want to come here for a better life, then fine- they just shouldn't commit crimes, they should do it legally, they should pay their bills, and they should not go on welfare.
c. America will fall if we keep letting illegals into our country, making welfare easier to get to, etc. When hardworking people become a minority and freeloaders a majority, all hell will break loose. More and more people from the first category will join the second one or leave for another country, and eventually our country (which is using the money collected from a few individuals to care for the masses) will collapse in on itself. That's why we must leave our borders open only to those that will contribute to society, force our citizens to work, and eliminate public aid for undeserving people- we don't want to become a third-world country.
P.S. No third-world country is capable of ever becoming a free place. Their people can't handle freedom- you see what happens when the illegals are unleashed here! Their tyrannical governments become this way because of the people that create, live under, and support them- people that are lazy and don't like to live by laws! When freedom is given to them, they become lazy again and start doing anything they want reguardless of laws. I answered this question because it's just an "if" question- don't expect Mexico to become the next U.S.A. anytime soon. (Let's not forget how much their economy depends on tourists and outsourced jobs from first-world countries.;) )

I might be tempted to. I might even be tempted to sneak in!
But I would learn the language and ways of the host country, and probably not be surprised if I got my head cracked for "breaking and entering" into their country. Really.
Of course, I would be bring with me a superior work ethic, and value of education, I am multi-lingual, (not fluent in Spanish any more but I could knock the rust off it quick enough ). I am not dragging in more kids than I can feed, I don't plan on mooching off Mexican social Services (good thing too! it's a bus ticket to the US) I am not afraid to do the dirtiest of jobs, and can do many of the more technical ones, so overall they would be getting a much better deal than the US is now!

The US of A IS a third world country.
You guys just don't realize it. That's the sad part.
You have as high, or higher percentage of your people living in poverty, than what YOU call a 3rd world country. You have more people starving in your 'land of plenty' than some countries have as an entire population.
The sad part is that nobody gives a ****. As long as it is not THEM.
The USA is in for a very rude awakening in the next few years.
You WERE on top, but your arrogance and self centeredness is leading you to the bottom.
I know you don't believe it, but it is true.
The USa is on the top of a looooong downwards slope, that will change your country forever.
Unfortunately, you guys screwed so many people on your way to the top, that you have Billions cheering your decent.

I might if Mexico would allow it, but I doubt they would. No other country has allowed so many poor inside its borders. The U.S.A. has always been there with aid and a helping hand to other countries, so for the person that said other countries are looking forward to our descent, this person should realize if the U.S.A. were ever to fall a lot of other countries would follow suit without America there to constantly bail them out of the mess they make of their own countries.
If Mexico would allow it, and I decided to migrate, I would be grateful to them for doing it, so I would do it LEGALLY, and I would learn the language as a show of respect and gratitude.

Of course it'd be reversed! I've long argued that if we really wanted to do something to stem immigration we'd focus on making Mexico a viable economic power. This is tricky, politics there are very corrupt (even more so than here LOL!)
Immigrants are the "founders" of this country, it's a long tradition. Plus they bring new, yummy food.

living right next to the border i have to say, they come here for jobs green cards and hospitals. so it would depend on the area and since when is mexico a third world country? they either dont have a lot of money or they are insanely rich and have waay more money then most people in america. The povertyy are the people who imigrate.

Probably in your fictional scenario, the prosperous Mexicans would bar the poorer gringolios just as the rich have always relegated the poor to the nether areas.
How would your simplistic little homily change anyone's basic nature in this regard?

A lot of people would move to Mexico for a better life. Do you think that the affluent Mexicans or the Mexicans seeking jobs would be any more happy about the drain on the economy or the competition for jobs than Americans are now?
