The purpose of the fish net was to provide a twine like base for the troops to camouflage their helmets. They would stick small branches and leaves into the netting on their helmets to break up the silhouette of his head and to blend in with the terrain all around them.
Sometimes the troops used the netting to hold large bandages, cigarettes, are any kind of contraband they would find.

To hold camouflage, take a few fresh-cut twigs from local flora and insert it in the netting – breaks up the distinctive size and shape of a human head. Even on its own it softens the edges of the helmet making it more difficult to pick out.

To attach leaves, branches, etc., for camoflage. When you stick your head up out of a bush, you want to look like a bush, not a big green ball!
