Wondered about that too.

Our cats descended from desert animals don't forget. There can be terrible wind, sand and dust storms in a desert. Could the notch be a way of lessening the wind's force by letting some air blow through?

Otherwise the ears could be completely flattened back enabling more sand to get into the ear canal.

Maybe not a good theory. Have you seen animal shows and the little foxes who live in the desert and have humongous ears. Didn't see a notch in their ears.

I'm not sure, it was nearly 3 months after we got our 2 cats that I noticed them I started to freak out that they got too rough when they were wrestling then I noticed it on both ear of both cats so I didn't worry

Lobes. They are probably like our appendix. They have evolved a charactaristic, and the residual lobe is no longer needed, but the remnants of it has still a way to dissapear completely.

Maybe they act like the slats on aeroplane wings... since we all know cats always land on their feet, even from great heights... so who knows?
