Children usually start kindergarten between the ages of 5 and 6 depending on the state they live in. In most states a child must be 5 on or before the first of September.to go to kindergarren. I believe that Kindergarten is not mandatory(I don't know of any states where it is) Mandatory education begins with first grade.(children are usually 6) Elementary school usually consists of grades Kindergarten-6, depending on the local school system; some go up to 8th and other only up to 4th or 5th. The next stage is middle school or junior high(although this term isn't used as much today) That usually encompasses 3 grades ranging from 5th to 9th, again depending on the local school district. The last component of public education is high school. High school can begin with 9th grade but often begins with 10th grade and ends with the 12th grade. 9th grade is also referred to as "Freshmen" year, 10th grade as "Sophomore, 11th grade as "Junior" and 12th grade as "Senior" year. Most kids graduate at 18 years of age.
A school term lasts about 9 to 10 months. depending on the school district. Each new school year usually starts in late August or early September and ends in late May or early June. There are a minimum days a year that school must be is session, depending on the state.
Hope this helps you!

Usually kids start kindergarden at age 5. My the eight-grade kids are usually 13. And they start high school when they are 14. That runs till the 12th grade and most kids are 18 when they graduate but some are a year younger or older. Where i grew up in Texas kind-5th grade is called elementary, while 6th-8th is called jr.high and then 9th (freshman)-12th (senior) is high school. There are places where 9th is a part of middle school or even by its self. There are also some places were 6th grade maybe with elementary.

It is confusing because it varies by school system.
Most kids start 1st grade when they are 6 years old. Most elementary schools are grades 1-5. Some elementary schools have kindergarten (for 5 year-olds and pre-K for 4 year-olds).
Middle school starts at 6th grade when most kids are 12 years old and consists of grades 6-8 (when children are going through puberty and early adolescence). Most children start high school when they are 14 and usually graduate when they are 18.
Some school systems use junior high instead of middle school. Junior high consists of grades 7-9. In which case, high school begins in 10th grade.

Generally primary school or elementary starts at Kindergarten for 5 year olds and goes through 6th grade. Middle school has traditionally been 7, 8, 9th grades. High school 10th through 12th grades. Each school district can organize schools in any configuration they choose. In school districts with expansive programs, high school often includes grades 9th -- 12th (the thinking being that more choices in foreign languages can be available to 9th grades, for example). Districts that have primary and secondary schools are called "unified school districts." Typically students graduate by age 17 or 18 but there is not exact starting/ending age.
There are many exceptions. Some schools offer pre-kindergarten which is a great choice for immature youngsters. Some schools offer a fifth year of high school. Some schools put 6th graders in the middle school. Often the rationale for choices has nothing to do with what's good for students but what's good for balancing available class room space. But reasons are created to fit the need.
By law schools are required to provide and free and appropriated education for all students. Opinions about what is appropriate can create problems for schools and for parents of children with special needs.
Hope this answers your questions.

The public education system in America is terrible!!!!!!!!!
No child left behind = passing w/o learning.
A student usually starts in the first grade at 6 years old, and if everything goes well, will graduate from high school at the age of 18.
