I learned about the faith on this site after a Sikh family moved into my neighborhood.
From that site----Kirpan:
Ceremonial Sword. A symbol of dignity and the Sikh struggle against injustice. It is worn purely as a religious symbol and not as a weapon.

In honoring their faith, they honor the 5 "K's" ( Khalsas) Along with unshorn hair and a turban, they wear a steel bracelet and carry a dagger, also utilize a special comb. These are believed to protect them from evil and weakness. Those more familiar with the faith can explain it in more detail.

Symbols. Same reason Christians carry crosses. Both are ways of killing people. That seems popular among religions.
