Battery. it sounds like a faulty battery; you need to exchange it or buy a whole new one. i never ever let a cordless be the only phone in the house. i have my old trusty wall 100 At/T phone, for just this reason. Cordless is the work of the devil.
Have you had the jacks checked? put a knwon working phone on all your jacks and see what happens, you have to do this manually, one at a time.

First, commas really do help.

Second, there could be a short in the phone. However, with modern devices it can be cheaper to replace it than to get it fixed.

Low battery level (there should be a battery level sign on your phone). Is there any kind of magnetic interferance between your phone and the base unit?

The base is not pluged in.
