I am from the Southern part of India. We have lots and lots of Cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale), Cashew Nuts and Cashew fruit there. Essentially it is the raw cashew pod that can harm you. It is by no means poisonous (in the sense that it can kill you ). If one gets the raw cashew pod fluid on your skin it will burn the skin (cause dermatitis in hypersensitive people). This simply is the maximum it will do. Again this happens only when the Cashew Pods are raw (green or unripe). Even though this is the case raw Cashew nuts are a delicacy in many cuisines all over the world. It can be used by roasting it when plucked raw. It is only after the Cashew fruit has ripened and the Cashew Pod has hardened and dried that we get the Cashew nuts as we see them in the markets. This the dry Nuts as we know.
This acidic oils within the Cashew Pod is what makes it impossible to sell the Cashew nuts with its pods. You will surely find this pod and the nut within sold all over in the Southern Indian State called Kerala.

Yes I have the cashew shell has to be open very carefully because they are very poison and if not open right the poison can go in the nut and can actually kill you. and that is why you don't see cashews in a shell.
