I want to travel by freighter from Los Angeles to Hawaii in the near future and have always wanted to try it.

That sort of travel doesn't exist anymore. It stopped about...20-30 yrs ago. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's true. These days the only way to get to Hawaii is by plane. The government has made of sure of that. And besides, you wouldn't want to cruise on a big boat around 7 volcanoes, would you?

Well, if you're located in LA, go down to the docks, and see what freighter companies come and go from there, and then come on the internet and look them up to see what you can find out about their sailing schedules and whether or not they carry passengers.
