My son slept in his cot until he was 2 . By this time he could speak very well and I was ready to move him to a bed. I knew he was ready because he would climb out of the cot and fall at times. This is what I did. I asked him if he was a baby and he said no, he is a big boy (he was very independent). I then told him that since he is a big boy, it is time for him to sleep in a bed so we were going to buy him one. He was so excited. We went to the furniture store together and we picked out a small (3/4 ) bed. I made sure that it was not too high in the event that he should fall (toddlers are used to the rails of the cot for protection). Needless to say when we got home he couldnt wait for it to be delivered. He has slept in his bed since then and he fell (better than falling from the cot) a couple of nights but nothing serious since the bed was low and I lay pillows on the floor for his protection. You can also put pillows on both sides of him/her to prevent him/her form falling.
If you already have a furnished room with a bed and your child is talking then take your child to the store and choose the sheets/bedding together. That's a sure way of getting him/her to buy into the idea. Once you have made the decision to move your child to a bed dismantle the cot and put it away out of sight.

My fourth child slept next to my bed in a crib for just over a year. At about 15 months we started getting him used to his "big boy bed" in the room with his brother. He was sleeping in it all night by 18 months.
It is really going to vary based on the family, the child's unique personality and needs, and the circumstances going on at the time. For example, a child going through adjusting to a move across the country or a new sibling in the family may have a harder time adjusting to a new room and new bed in addition to everything else.
In the end, you know your child best, and will know when the time is right to move to a bed.

I have 3 children and each was ready to move from a crib to a bed at a different rate. (between 18-months and 2 years)
Because I waited until each was ready they all did very well. I never used the side rails on the bed preferring a nest of pillows on the floor next to the bed in case of roll-outs..
Children wil tell you when they are ready to move to the next step of development all you have to do is listen and help ensure safe transition..

I wish I had of kept a crib that was purchased for me at my baby shower because my 2 y/o is still in my bed. She has her own bed but refuses to sleep in the bed at night but doesn't mind taking naps in her bed. But she has always slept in the bed with me and its hard getting her to be a big girl and sleep alone. So its better to do it early rather than late like me.

In my family, and for most of my friends, all the babies were around a year old, definitly before they were two.
They all did fine with it. Although my best friend is having issues with her 20 mo old, since he thinks his new bed is for playing on and not sleeping on :)

It varies with every child. The child will know when he is ready. Do not be in a hurry to make your child more mature than what he is.
