The above answers are all correct, but comparing front and rear projction TVs is like comparing apples and oranges. They are not used the same way. You cannot watch a front-projection TV in a lighted room; even the brightest projectors require a darkened room. Therefore, you cannot watch a front projector "casually" (like while doing something else); watching TV becomes an "event", like going to the movies. Many feel that that is the only real "home theater"; it's like sitting in a movie theater. Also, you are not likely to find rear-projection TV with screens in the 100" - 200" range, which is not unusual front projectors. In addition, good front projectors cost much more than rear projectors (for equivalent quality). The lowest cost quality FP units are about $3500, but they go as high as $40,000 or more. In addition you have to add the price of the screen: a good one costs several hundred dollars, but they also can cost as much as $2,000 for a high quality motorized unit. There's even more, but I think it's clear that if you are thinking "TV", it has to be rear projection.

LCD rear projection tv's, which form most of the current crop of rear projection technology, utilize a powerful light which is passed through an LCD chip containing the video pixels themselves which are in turned magnified through a lens and then projected onto the screen. This technology offers the best value, although the picture quality isnt quite as good as that of the best front projectors
The image from a front projector iis projected onto a separate screen . A projector has many fewer parts than a typical TV. You'll find a high-resolution imager (DLP chip or LCD panels), an ultra-high-intensity lamp, superb scaling and de-interlacing circuitry, top-grade optics, and a wide selection of video inputs. What you won't find is a built-in screen, or a bulky cabinet, or stereo speakers. This is the way to go if you want the ultimate picture quality.

A projection tv displays the image directly onto the screen therefore it makes it a little harder to see if a light source is shinging directly into the tv cause the two light sources fight each other. While a rear projection tv reflects the light off a mirror inside the tv then the mirror shoots the image you see onto the screen. Rear projections a better in a lighted enviroment. I work at Sears selling tv's so I have to know the diffrence between all tv's

A "projection", also referred to as a "Front Projection", is basically like a T.V. version of the old slideshow projectors, commonly used in offices. However, when hocked up to the right equiptment (cable, DVD, etc) they function as a normal T.V.
But I agree with the above poster, the Rear Projections are the best value, the most common, and the best picture (since it functions like a real T.V.) Go for a Rear Projection.

With a rear projector - the immage generator (projector) is located behind the screen. A regular projector project the immage in front of the screen and normally hangs over your head etc.
Rear projectors are the best and the most $$
