No, they are horrible! Say you speak Spanish, and you come across a word that you don't know, then these are pretty good. Or, there is a webpage that you need to translate from, let's say Russian, into English.
Now, the English that it translates the Russian into definately won't be very good, but it's usually good enough for you to get the general idea.
If you want to avoid embarrassment from a native speaker of a foreign language, do not use this to make full sentences to talk to them. You'll probably be laughed at.

They're decent for translating from the language you don't know into the language you do know. Then you can tell if it makes sense or not, and you should be able to spot a word that must have been a homograph (it's a bonus if English ISN'T the language you don't know, since it has so many homographs) or a different meaning. A tip for translating into the language you don't know: make your sentence as unambiguous as possible, and avoid idioms at all cost.

I would have to say no. I speak Spanish, Italian and English (which is much less impressive than it sounds) and you must have a good knowledge of the language in order to correct the translations the translators give you.

Nope. Free Internet translator applications only give you a rough gist. No machine or software can replicate the craft of translation.

i've had to write a paper in German about a river and i typed it into the translator one line at a time, so i could compare a couple words i knew. It was an oral presentation and i got an A....

no way, you will not even get the general idea. It does not even translate correct enough for you to get at least what its trying to say. Its a bunch of gibberish. those web sights such as freetranslation.com all suck. don't trust any of those web sights at all.
