I got glasses when I was in the third grade, but I've seen toddlers wearing them (with a strap behind their heads so they couldn't take them off). For children that can't read yet, they use an eye chart with familiar shapes on it (apple, house, etc). First they make sure that the child can identify the objects, then they test the vision, just like with a standard eye chart.
Hope this helps!

As others have said, there are eye charts with symbols like stars, hearts, etc. ALSO eye doctors now have machines that automatically determine the needed correction without the conscious cooperation of the patient (except to sit still and keep eyes open during the process). I believe I have seen children under the age of 2 with glasses. The new technology makes this more practical.

You may have an eye exam as early as 6 months old. There are specialized tests done to infants/children which are more objective. In those cases, the patient's answers are not needed to get a diagnosis/results.

I began wearing glasses when I was three. My grandma figured out I was having trouble seeing. I don't remember going to the eye doctor, though, but I do remember picking out my glasses.

I've seen infants in glasses.......at that age, they're basically guessing on the exact vision but know that there is a sight problem.

Age 2. They reccommend you take your child at that age. They have tests they do without them being able to read.
