Cucumbers, Tomatoes are the 2 main basics that make a Good Salad..The extra stuff you can add if you like are: Croutons, Sliced Onions and Shredded Carrots..If you REALLY want to get fancy, you can get Sliced Almonds (they're expensive) & Feta Cheese (also expensive), and sliced Radishes.

Keep in mind that the Leaves make ALL the difference. Plain Iceberg lettuce leaves are very basic. But "Green Leaf Lettuce" or "Red Leaf Lettuce" make salads more chic and "up to date". They are a little more expensive, but you should use them if yo're having dinner guests.

Here's a list of good stuff -- shredded cheese, sliced black olives, sunflower kernals, garbanzo beans, sliced hearts-of-palm, sliced water chestnuts, canned drained bean sprouts, real-bacon bits, chopped pecans, cut-up canned mandarin oranges, chopped-up sweet red peppers (from out of a bottle). These are all good stuff that you can keep on-hand in your cupboard or refrigerator (without them going bad) -- and then you can pick-and-choose for variety. You'll have a different salad every time ... never gets boring.
