How do I deactivate my yahoo messenger?

I am getting messages on my Yahoo messanger and I need to deactivate it. Please do this right away!

Yahoo messenger is for receiving messages. If you don't want it to run at all you can uninstall it or go to preferences/general and take out the check for automatically start with windows. If you are receiving unwanted messages from people you don't know then go to your preferences/ignore list and select ignore anyone not on my list.

Disable it at startup.
