XB-70A Valkyrie. It was pushing the enveloppe with grandeur. 250 tons at Mach 3, 6 turbojet engines, over one billion $ in R&D in early 1960's money, titanium and honeycomb stainless steel construction, innovative compression lift approach.

There never was a plane with so much crazy novel idea in it before, there hasn't been one since.

Bell 222-B. Yes, choppers are TOO airplanes, just with moving wings.

As for fixed wing, I have to go with either a F-14 Tomcat (for sentimental reasons) or the MiG-29 Fulcrum. Both were the state of the art at the time, and truth be told, STILL are damned formidable planes to mess with.

Piper Cub because you can land anywhere.

Ever read Richard Bach's "Out of My Mind" (William Morrow, 1999), about his attempts to perfect his Piper Cub airplane with advice from aviators and engineers in a parallel universe?

The Boeing B-29. It was very large and advanced for it's time. Pressurized cabins, remote controlled turrets, and a central fire control system. It dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and ended WWII. Also it has a nice aerodynamic shape and just looks fierce.
