...or does the other person hear in their own language? I from what I read in Acts I believe the person speaking is using their own language and the receiver hears in their own language. Also, I read that's there is always an interpretation. Not an interpreter.

Can be both ways. What good is a language or tongue that nobody can understand? Some say it is a prayer language they don't even know what it means but what good is that? Does that say our prayers really don't mean anything? You need an interpreter if you are going to speak in a language that nobody knows that is in the gathering or it only goes to edify the speaker and not God. Like saying, "hey look at me that I can speak a language nobody here can speak." So you need someone to interpret or what good is it to speak in a language nobody knows? What would you get out of a church service that was done in greek? Since you did not know it, you would get nothing from it but confusion. But if you had that greek speaker and had an interpreter, you would know everything that was said so you would be blessed. That is what the whole thing is for, teaching others about Christ. How can you have an interpretation without an interpreter?

1. It is either you speaking to God about something private - no interpretation (you may however)

2. A praise - may or may not be interpreted doesnt matter

3. The person is receiving a revelation or prophecying - must have an interpretation (the person will vocalize or another will vocalize it)

4. To witness to another in another language. ( you are speaking in that's person language.

5. No tongue is valid unless it is truly the Holy Ghost working and not a person just making noise.

6. The person is either speaking in a tongue of God unknown to humans or a humanly tongue in which the speaker does not know.

7. It would be done loudly and clearly unless it is private in which case it would still be clear no stuttering and such.

Speaking in tongues is a language that somebody somewhere knows, it is however speaking a language that is not known by the speaker. It was, and is a gift of the Holy Spirit for ministering to people outside of your own language. The Spirit of God may give you, or someone else the gift of interpretation, but to be sure somebody will be able to relay in the interpreted language what was said. This is for crossing language barriers more than anything else. HOWEVER: This is not to be confused with praying in the Spirit, which is language unknown to man. Paul said: I thank my God that I pray in other tongues, or in the Spirit, more than ye all. Praying in the Spirit, or praying in the Holy Ghost, as some may call it is a part of the Gift of the Holy Spirit that was given at Salvation. It is in fact the essence of what is talked about in Acts 1 and 2, and from which the Christian may receive Power for witnessing. Hope this helps? Sincerely "Freedom in Christ'

I forgot the scripture but Paul says in Acts that the purpose of tongues is for further knowledge and if no one other stands you then it profits no one and is pointless. If someone understands then he or she can interpret but if no one can then its just plain silly. I believe speaking in tongues can mean two things that you can talk to those that speak another language like spanish or you are really speaking the original language Adam spoke.

Both, actually.

You cite Acts and the miracle that God gave the first Christians, how when they spoke, all the people in the audience heard them in their native tongue (language).

In I Corinthians 14, Paul says he speaks in tongues more than all of them; he wasn't referring to volume of speech (words), but in number of languages he knew and used (remember, Paul was a well studied scholar). Since he also writes of interpretation of tongues, there would be no need for such if people heard everything in their own language already.

from what I have read, and learned, Speaking in tougues is not really a specific language, but a form of language between the holy spirit and speaking person's spirit. and the only ONE way to prove that it comes from God up above is that there is an interpreter at that moment who can interpret exactly what the message is, If know one is there to interpret the message it is not from God, but from another source or more likely an act and completly false.

No, you are actually speaking in another language.

1 Corinthians 14:5-8 says: "I would like everyone of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified."

See you speak another language, but it is to no benefit unless there is an interpreter for the church to understand what is being said.

Speaking in tongues is done in a completely foreign language to all present. It requires an interpreter who is connected to the spirit as well. And it is usually identified as a 'dead' language.

tongues is not a known language, yours or otherwise, others hear it in their own language. I was praying with friends, one was speaking in tongues and all of a sudden I heard what he was saying in English "...help us Father, we are so cold.." It was a hot summer day, we were not physically cold and I thoght spiritually we were pretty fired up so it was a bit of a surprise. I asked my friend later if he had said that in English and he was quite baffled. Hadn't said anything of the sort.
