If they are not properly designed to carry the weight you put into them or are not properly adusted to fit your back they will cause you back problems over time, depending on how often and for how long you carry it on your back. You could end up with poor posture as a result, which will make you shorter.

I believe you are slightly taller in the morning when you get out of bed then at night when you go to sleep because your spine compresses slowly during the day as you stay upright, but it should not compress beyond a normal safe point or bend out of shape unless you are over-loaded or dont take care.

If your bag is poorly designed, too heavy, or packed improperly it can be damaging to your back and cause you to have bad posture, making you look shorter. Buy a well-made backpack (try Mountain Equipment Co-op) and pack light every day. You might do even better with a backpack that can be rolled along the floor thanks to its extendable handle. Pack the heaviest things in the center of your back, closest to your body.

I don't think so. You should have a backpacks with wheel. This way you pull your backpack by hands.
It is not good for your back wearing the backpack. The doctors will back me up on this.

nothing can make you shorter. that's a biological fact.
if you wear a VERY heavy backpack for years, your spine becomes hunched (it bends). this makes you look shorter than you really are

No. But they can give you back problems and if they are poorly made, they can affect your posture which can make you look shorter.

Well, not really. But if it weighs fairly heavy, it can take you down a half inch while it's on your back.
