Microsoft and some other program developers build features in their programs that use the Internet to check to see if you have the latest version or patches for the program then download the patch from the net. You are probably referring to Windows updates. Windows sometimes needs to shut down and restart to add the update to itself so that it is not running when the patch is added. Simplified explanation.

Automatic Updates take place at a certain time of the day, automatically started by your computer (you have to select the option to turn on the auto update and you can pick a time) the computer just scans to see if there are any newer editions to Windows programs that you have and sees if they need "updating" The updates are usually minor, so it's not very important. it's just a good idea to have everything up-to-date, espcially anti-virus softwares.

the automatic updates are scheduled task to update your system.
When you turn on Automatic Updates, Windows routinely checks the Windows Update Web site for high-priority updates that can help protect your computer from the latest viruses and other security threats. These updates can include security updates, critical updates, and service packs. Depending on the setting you choose, Windows automatically downloads and installs any high-priority updates that your computer needs, or notifies you as these updates become available.
If you want to know more you can use the help of your system

Automatic updates is a program's (e.g. Microsoft Windows) way of keeping your system up-to-date with the most current files needed by your computer. In the case of MS Windows, the updates primarily include security fixes. You should have automatic updates enabled.

Automatic updates are software updates for Windows XP. Thee system works the way that every time you are online and there are updates for Windows XP available, they start downloading in the background while you surfing the net. Once it finishes download, it will prompt you to install them to your computer and restart it. Have in mind that it can take some time for the system to do that so your computer might be rather slow during downloading and the installation procedure.

If you go into the control panel, by clicking start-settings-control panel, click on the "automatic updates" icon, then you can set your computer, to get automatic updates, and you will not have to start them from the start menu. This way, you will not forget to get your updates..Set them to get updates, at least once a week..good luck..

I would hope you would not use Automatic Updates. Microsoft has a sneaky way of putting cookies to monitor your computer in them. Ther come in updates besides the infamous WGA trojan so I suggest you donload them manually and READ carefully what they are BEFORE you install them.

Automatic Updates are either Driver updates or Security updates for your Windows system. They allow your system to be updated when you are currently on your machine or away from it.
