Canaries are great for people who want to hear a bird sing, but they are not very friendly. Your 11 year old will probably want a bird that is a friend. A cockatiel makes an excellent pet. The males can be taught to whistle and even talk a bit. They will ride around on your shoulder, and love being around people. Budgies (sometimes called parakeets, though they are actually not parakeets) would be a second choice.
Look for hand raised birds from a breeder instead of buying one from a pet store. They have already been used to people handling them and are much less likely to bite.

A canary is a good bird, but I would think an 11 year old would more enjoy a bird that they could have an interaction with such as a cockatiel, a budgie or a parrotlet. A small parrot can hand tamed to sit with you and would enjoy your company and can even be taught to talk.
Of course, parrots do need a lot of attention! They need daily cage cleaning, clean water and food. They also need to be fed a nutritious pellet food, some seed and a lot of fresh vegetables for a good and long life.
Since they enjoy company, they also need lotsa love and time out of their cage on a daily basis. As one person replied, they can be messy, but the joy the bring into a household definitely outweighs the mess.

Canaries are nice pets, but an 11 year old would probably enjoy a bird that he/she could interact with more. like a parakeet or a cockatiel. Canaries don't particularly like being held or handled, and they won't sit on your shoulder or "hang out" with you while you do stuff around the house- my cockatiel used to sit on my shoulder while I did home work.

Canaries can be the easiest pet birds to have! Even the smallest apartment has room for one. They are simple to care for and do not require much attention. Canaries are solitary in nature, so a lone male is perfectly content by himself and will sing whether you are there or not. It can be your only pet, or part of a household menagerie.

I can tell you from experience that a cockatiel who is hand tamed for an 11 yr old will last that little kid a life time if cared for properly. Other parrot birds tend to nip at you and turn on you ending up biting you, but a bonded cockatiel like that will never hurts its owner. They should run you $40.00 depending on your location and the prices in that area. But make sure you look in the news paper or online local ads to go get one from a private breeder who advertises because they usally have wonderful hand tamed babies for way under $100.00

I personally don't like birds, I wouldn't keep one in the house. Their feathers get all over everything, I remember when I was younger my sister had one and it seemed like we were always getting sick and my mom used to complain about the feathers getting all over everyhting. She ended making my sister get rid of it, seemed like we got sick less often and no more feathers all over the place. Hope that helps a little.
