Puppies get 3 rounds of Distemper-combo starting at about 8 weeks and spaced a month apart. It is recommended they have this boostered yearly unless they have had a reaction...then the vet will likely recommend a different protocol. Never have your dog go more than 1 year between distemper-combo shots without your vet's approval. If this is not boostered yearly and they don't have enough immunity to these diseases built up in their system...they can get very sick, even die. There is a test available that will tell you if your dog has the right level of immunity and could therefore go longer between shots. As far as Rabies, it depends where you live. Some places require that yearly. In Wisconsin, the first one is given at 16 weeks, boostered 1 year later, and (provided you keep up on the schedule for Rabies) it's boostered every 3 years after that. Rabies can legally only be given by a licensed vet. You really need to talk to your vet as to what they recommend for your particular dog. There are also additional vaccines that may be recommended depending on your dog. Lymes is annual boosters, and recommended for dogs in high-tick areas, Bordetella (kennel cough) is given every 6-12 months for dogs that are going to be boarded or exposed to a lot of other dogs. With dogs that are over 16 weeks, it is every year. With puppies, there are "puppy shots" that you must give them at certain ages. I think we started my dog off at 7 or 8 weeks with her shots and ended at 16 weeks.

Since your dog is a year old, your vet will probably give all needed shots within a couple weeks time (a couple of shots one week, wait 2 weeks and then come back for the others). That's what happened when I adopted a year and a half old dog from a local shelter here in my town.

Is it a puppy? Puppies get a series of shots from age 6 weeks to 16 weeks. Usually given 3 weeks apart. Then a rabies shot. Ours get a booster every year of the combo shot, and the rabies. Some states do the rabies every 3 years.

Your dog should have had its first set of shots around 6 weeks of age.
It should have its next visit to the vet at 8 weeks old to do a worm check (poop test).
Next around 12 - 15 weeks old the dog should get its second set of shots. Some vets break this up into two sessions - ex. 12 weeks and 14 weeks, because there are a lot of vaccinations in this set.
After your second set of shots the dog will need monthly heart worm tablets (Only if you live east of the Mississippi River, they don't seem to get heart worms out west) but wont need any more shots until next year.
After one year old, they only need shots once a year and heart worm pills.
If your dog hasn't been to the vet yet and is older than 6 weeks - don't panic. Just get to the vet and they will get you up to date quickly and safely.
Hope this helps

They need initial puppy shots. The first rabies is good for 1 year-then every 3 years. They usually get all other shots every year-distemper, heartworm check, parvo.check. Plus flea and tick medicine.

my dogs get their vaccinations once a year. the state that I live in requires Rabies once every 3 years. I get the bordetella vaccine every 6 months. I work for a vet and my dogs go to work with me so its important to keep them up to date on everything. I did work for a vet that would not vaccinate this way . His protocol was 8 wks, 12wks, 16wks, then 1 year later and that was it . no more vaccinations except for rabies which is by state law. I guess its up to you and your vet.

Call the local vet or animal shelter. Dogs needs shots every year, unless they are puppies, then it is more frequent.
