Before you decide against gold, remember that these rings need to last a very long time. At least, that's the goal! Also, remember where ivory comes from - bad idea. I've seen shell rings, and they're cool and inexpensive. Go to a rock store or a tourist place, that's where I got mine. Also, consider having some made of marble, they might last longer.

Ivory I think is illegal or a very restricted material in the U.S because of the ways it is collected. Ivory comes from teeth and tusks of elephants, walrus, hippos and mammouths. Poachers go out and kill these animals just for their teeth and husks. And it is very limited because of decline in the animals. You can find ivory in old piano keys.
Shell can be a brittle material and not stand up to time. It can crack, break, and shatter.
I've listed a site below that uses precious metals to house the elk ivory. But I don't think that is what you are looking for.

How about wooden bands, that way nothing has to be killed to get the ivory for your rings. You can find shell rings at the little shops at the beach. Try the link below, you can customize the rings anyway you want.

There is a jeweller called Bernard Passman. He makes creations out of black Cayman coral with Russian White diamonds. He has a great deal of wedding bands that are very unusual and absolutely stunning. He used to have a shop in New Orleans (a great deal of good that will do now, I know) but here's his info in Grand Cayman:

Good luck and best wishes on your upcoming wedding!

I guess I just don't understand why you'd need to kill an animal or rape the environment to show your love. I'm just not into that, sorry. Perhaps you can find glass or stone instead? Several below are quite lovely. : )
