"Religion is the opiate of the masses."
It's a crutch for a lot of people. Life is frightening, and they need somewhere to turn. Ideas of religion are easy to come by, and most of the time, very comforting.
Either that, or they were raised that way. Many times it doesn't even occur to people to question how they were raised, to question the beliefs of their family. They simply take them on and follow them.

Blind faith is a drug. It relieves the practitioner of the responsibility to think, to reason and to take full credit for their actions. It also allows them to take advantage of more primitive (and therefore juvenile) practices of violence and oddball behavior, on the ruse that it is 'sanctioned' by the religion.
That's why you find fundamentalists reaching back to the old testament for guidance; the sophistication and greater personal responsibility espoused by the Jesus stories is too much like advanced, thinking, responsible behavior for most religionists to endorse.

Because they've been told, "Believe that what you're being told is the ultimate, supreme and only truth or burn in hell forever." Having been told that before they were old enough to reason or have experience on which to question, they follow blindly.

Some people do that, and never find the truth their whole lives.
Some people forget about religion and all its matters, ridding themselves of its "suffering".
Some people study their religion and others, and find out the truth and figure out for themselves what is the most correct and plausible religion existing. I am proud to be of this group, and proud to be a Muslim.

Because when something goes wrong in the world or something bad happens to a persons life it's easier to place the blame elsewhere rather than take it as the way that life goes

It's not so much that they follow a religion, it's the fact that they blindly disregard all others who may be different than them. And I agree with Einstein.

First and most important rule of humanity.....People are truly and deeply stupid
Second rule of humanity..we are generally greedy, lazy, perverse, evil creatures who will use any tool or concept to create trouble and/or destruction
Third is people are raised to obey and not question
Fourth is that humanity in general is so weak minded that it needs a system in place to keep them from thinking too hard or deeply

Well Grace,
I think that it is a part of the fallen nature.
In there somewhere is the knowledge of God.
So, realizing that you are in need, men have tried to get in contact with God by creating systems of worship.
The systems are flawed, due to the fallen nature.
So here we are. We need help.
Who can help us?
I think that it is up to God to help us, don't you?
I have never heard of someone that is lost not needing help.
UN less of course you have amnesia.
WOW I think I have it.
Amnesia; and we don't know we are lost.
