It could be a number of things. Spyware seems to be the biggest problem I run into with slow computers. Try downloading a good spyware removal software program.
Lavasoft's adaware is pretty good and they have a free version...
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3405-8022-5153545.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
Spybot Search and Destory is anohter good free one. I actually run both on most machines I clean.

Also, make sure your antivirus is up to date and running. If you need one. A good free one is available from Grisoft.

I see Grisoft is also now offering free antispyware on the same link above. I personally have not tried it yet, but if there anti-virus program is any indication, I am sure it's a great product!
Also, consider paying a visit to PCpitstop.com and run a full batch of tests on your machine. It will give recommendations. You do not have to create an account.

Good luck!

There could be a number of reasons why your computer slowed down:
1. The hard drive has less than 25% free space. If so, try to delete any unused files and programs from the hard drive to free more space. Also, clear the recycle bin/trash if it has anything in it.
2. The hard drive has become heavily fragmented. Go to Start|All Programs (or Programs)|Accessories|System Tools|Disk Defragmenter and run the program. It may take as little as 20 minutes or as many as a few hours to complete depending on the computer speed and size of the hard drive.
For absolutely better resutls, I recommend using Diskeeper, which you try as a demo and buy at http://www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/home/professional.asp?pe=6 Microsoft licenses a stripped-down version of Diskeeper as its Disk Defragmenter. Diskeeper will do a much better job of defragmenting the hard. If you use your computer every day or so, I would highly recommend defragging the hard drive once a week.
3. The computer does not have sufficient RAM to handle all the new programs you added in a fast way. If you are running Windows 98 SE, I would recommend having at least 256MB of RAM. If you are using Windows XP, I would recommend at least 1 GB of RAM. RAM is cheap to buy, and is a great addition to any computer.
4. If your computer is older than 4 years it may be too old to handle new programs well, even if you upgrade the RAM, I would highly recommend upgrading to a new computer.

A few possible measures:
1. It might be infested with spyware. Download Adaware and run it once to see what's going on.
2. Run hard drive defragmenter by going to STart -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. That will definitely speed your computer up at least a little.
3. See what programs are currently running by opening Windows Task Manager and clickingon Processes tab. If there is anything suspicious or something you don't need, get rid of it. If you don't know what it is, google it.

A.)start - run - type "msconfig" and press enter. go to the STARTUP tab and uncheck all those unneccessary programs which you think should not be running in the background as they comnsume system resources. only leave those programs checked that are important e.g. antivirus. click OK and it will restart the computer.
B.) if you use internet a lot then you should delete Temporary Internet Files too using the following steps:
1. Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
3. On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.

There's probably a lot of extra stuff on it that you don't need. Do you have Adaware? You can download it for free, and it helps to clean it up. Also be sure to defragment the harddrive and delete the cookies and temporary internet files. Also hit ctrl alt delete at the same time to see what programs are running that you don't need. My kodak program would run all the time if I didn't turn it off. Go to Add\Remove programs and remove anything that you don't use. Hope this helps
Here's a link to download adaware

Try to upgrade your RAM (system memory) and try to not run as many programs at once. Check and see if there are a lot of things going on in the background. At a last resort, upgrade your processor to a faster speed.

- Run DISK CLEANUP regularly
- Run Defrag regularly
- Check your Anti-virus solution, get updates and run scans.
(Avoid the Internet Security editions, since they carry way too much baggage and slow down your system)
You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster
- go to START and RUN, type MSCONFIG and uncheck programs that you do not need in the STARTUP section.
- Get more RAM. With Windows XP, it would be better with 512MB and more like awesome with 1GB or 2GB. Check your system at http://www.coastmemory.com

Try defragmenting. It speeds things up. Click on Start, and look for an icon that says 'defragment' then choose it. It takes a few minutes.

Upgrade your RAM (last option), try 'cleaning' (Ace Utilities) your PC, uninstall unwanted softwares, don't have a lot of softwares installed unnecessarily. Hope that helps.
